Recall on dad's deer rifle. Yikes!

About 15 years ago, my dad inherited a Winchester model 100 .308. These are semi-auto rifles made in the early 1960's. He has hunted with it for about the last 10, and we have both shot deer with it. Its a fantastic gun for hunting deer in the northern forest. Large (yet light) stock with beautiful oak themed carving, great for gloved hands. Short barrel moves around easily in a blind. Action seems impervious to weather. Zero malfunctions.

I recall my dad mentioning something along the lines of, "Someone told me there were problems with them, but it works fine for me", when he got the gun. He left the gun with me for the winter, to be refinished and have a new scope put on. So I looked into the 'problems'. Not good! The firing pin can break off, and lodge in the extended position. The gun goes full auto if you're lucky, and blasts off all 5 round in the magazine. If you're unlucky, one of the cartridges ruptures in your face, or the action blows up in your face.

We never had an issue with it, but I confirmed with Winchester that it has not been repaired. The former owners of Winchester still cover the repair, so I'm getting a replacement pin. Sure wishing dad had been a bit more diligent about following up if he knew there was an issue!

Not ours, but similar:
