Tend to agree with you on the appeal. Bought my Colt AR when my state decided its residents weren't mature enough to own one. As it turns out it is a fun gun to shoot, light, very little recoil and surprisingly accurate even with just the flip up 'iron' sights. dinner plates at 200yds are not much of a challenge (and I am an awful rifle shooter).
That said I think mini 14's are only slightly less ugly than any random AK. Crappy wood is possibly worse looking than plastic.
IMO fark the general public. They are pussies that are giving away our rights faster than we got them and their opinion means nothing.
As a last point the .357 lever gun (or 30.30 or .35) is a neat idea too.
