The culprit was my Permatune Unit. The Tach circuit shorted out which caused my tach to be erratic.

The Permatune finally fully fried last Sunday. Had the car towed to my Mech and after thorough inspection, it was determined that the Permatune was defective. I was still in the warranty period so no cost out of pocket other than tipping the tow guy 20 bucks for getting my car out of a parking garage with ceiling heights of only 6'10". I normally require a flat bed but he was able to use casters for the rear wheel and a wheel lift for the front.

So, it's not always an alternator about to go bad when your tack decides to dance uncontrollably.

thanks for your feedbacks,
Carl
"....not always...alternator..."

Not conclusive....was the Permatune failure due to intermittent stator shorting in the alternator...???

My alternator failure not only resulted in a jumping/erratic tach but also a CDI failure.

Wait for it.....
