Yes, mine did also, except for hitting a bump in the road and then a stator winding would intermittently short out due to overheated stator wire insulation. With one stator winding non-functional the VR must increase the output of the other 2 in order to get a correct average at the battery. But back there in the engine compartment you have seriously over-voltage (>15 volts) SPIKES.
