How about a Miata? It does not get quite the gas mileage but a pretty solid car. If my parents had gotten me a car like that I would have been over the moon.

I also think getting her involved in maintenance is a great idea. My dad thought it was important. First job I ever helped with was replacing an alternator in my hand me down ford tempo. I never forgot and now my husband and I are one sensor away from putting my new rebuilt motor in the 911. Who knows you may spark something.
