The reason my nephew did the propane thing is natural gas was going to cost a bunch to get a line to his property and he didn't want to have to worry about storing gasoline or diesel. Made a lot more sense to go propane and have regular deliveries keep the tank topped up.

You could put in a natural gas powered generator, assuming you have a gas powered furnace and water heater like I do.

Saw an episode of Hillbilly Blood, or something like that where they built a still/gasifier that made wood gas out of burning wood and hooked it up to a regular gasoline generator to run the electrics on his house.
