Breaking it down is definitely the way to go. One other thing, there are companies in any decent sized town that sell boxes. You can find a lot of different sizes available, more choices than if you buy them at U-haul and places like that. Custom sized boxes can be made as well and I've done that many times when trying to get something shipped that was a challenge to fit into the postal size guidelines for a particular country.
