I didn't want to run cat5/6 everywhere either, the NP507s are a good solution at 600Mbps. I've got a WG602 WAP to connect to one of the 507s and stick down the other end of the house. Rendered cinder block does a good job of attenuating the wireless signal.
Ive got a bit of a convoluted wireless network going on, that has never really worked well from one end of the house to the other. It's got PC's, laptops, Ipads, Iphones/android phones, kindles, WDTV Live boxes all fighting each other for bandwidth. They all come back via wireless to a PC in the office that is connected to the Interwebs via a 3G mobile usb dongle. It's ugly to say the least.
After two years here, we've finally found an ISP that will give us a DSLAM port and we've signed up for a naked ADSL2+ with VoiP plan that'll also port our landline phone number to VoiP. Finally hitting this milleniums technology.
So, I decided to do a big restructure of the home network with a new Gigabit switch, the NP507s, and the existing WG602, and am also putting another WDTV box in the bedroom.
Now to come up with a new witty SSID for the WAP, I'm thinking 'nothintoseeheremoveon'
