+1 on the leading edge protection. I'd use some of that 3M clear rock chip protection film that they are using on cars these days.

Also, I use aluminum foil duct tape that the HVAC guys use to protect the heated areas of the belly pan. The adhesive is strong and heat proof, and the foil is thick enough to be valuable.
