Did wireless in my nephews new 2 story house several years ago. All the studs in the house were metal, each room is it's own faraday cage...and the rock wall cutting the house in half of with the fireplace in it....talk about wireless nightmare. And he was off the grid for any kind of wired ISP. Put in two 2gig radio ISPs into a Mac mini running gateway software that shares the bandwidth between the two ISPs. Fed that into 4 wired Airport base stations for bridged wireless throughout the house. Works quite well.
Also set up his 6 kids each with their own MacOS server account so they could login to their own stuff on any computer in the house. That way they didn't have to fight over who was using which computer. It even worked well as the older kids got laptops with mobile server accounts so they could still get to their own stuff no matter which computer was available. Oh yeah, and my All-in-one color laser, it's neat to scan wireless to my laptop even though my Epson is a much better scanner.
My house is small enough that one wireless base in the middle where the main TV is does the entire house just fine. But the only things on wireless are my laptop, phone, iPad, and any guests that come visit.
My wireless is named Homey. I can only see 2 other wireless networks from my laptop right now....2wire134 and wevegotrats. My neighbors on either side of me say they turn theirs off when they aren't actually online because they are afraid someone will use their bandwidth. My had been open since I first set it up and I even told my neighbors to jump on if they want. I used to have some really hot rod 2 watt wireless routers I could see from my laptop a block away.
