I am not a marine but I understand where you are coming from. I used to work with a guy whose last name was Devalois and he was originally from the US. He called himself Devaloy. But the Frenchman I was with told him he was mispronouncing his own name and should be pronounced Devalwah! We laughed and thought it was a big joke. There is a tendency to pronounce French names in the US in the southern twang as mentioned above. I don't get bent out of shape over this stuff but some folks just don't know their heritage or would prefer to blend in. Vive la difference!
