As a final note, in adjustiing the torque the wrench that I had must not have been that accurate because it was still eating the gears (used the previous halfway munched gears as a testbed) so I found adjusting it by hand was more effective.
Just got back from driving through the mountains with the top out... :-)

Hmm...maybe to save buying a torque wrench that can actually measure those torques I'll just use my old semi-stripped gears as a testbed to get just the right feel & then back off just a little.
