I've wondered why the did the front cowl as if it were an air-cooled radial when it had a watercooled v-12. Seems like it's more aerodynamic to do a radiator like the P-51, for instance instead of putting it right behind the spinner.
I guess it worked, though, fast as hell.
They did that with some of the FW-190's also, but those were 'conversions' from the original radials.
