Other than the F/R fade issue all you need do is add a 4 channel amplifier that has a MOSFET DC-DC upconverter. Legacy/(obsolete) systems used only the 12 volt base battery supply to drive the speakers, even in the best "bridge" speaker drive configuration the 12 volt limit would over result in "flat-topping" higher level waveforms. The higher the frequency, the worse the effect gets, less time of the low voltage to overcome speaker inductance and back EMF.
In my '78 Targa my amp is bolted to the bottom of the passenger seat with a heavy duty power supply wire (an fuse, inline) directly to the battery.
I liked the "retro" look of the factory original radio but finally caved to get "direct" CD capability, multi-cd player. Kenwood head unit, one that isn't such a "show-off", gaudy, out of place in our cars.
Those of us being a bit more mature, musically speaking, upgrading to a good set of speakers, STRONG MAGNETS, will more than suffice BASS wise.
