What I've read is that .22 long rifle is: .223 and .22 mag is .224. I had a Ruger Single Six with both .22 long rifle and .22 magnum cylinders allowing me to shoot either round from the same handgun. There were claims of better accuracy with the magnums. I did not find that to be the case for me. I suspect that if there is a bore difference, the lead of the long rifle round expands enough to fill any gap. My Single Six shot better with the .22 long rifle ammo than I could, any accuracy issues were mine and not the gun. I suspect any noticeable documented accuracy difference is due to better quality jacketed .22 magnum ammo being compared to poorer quality .22 long rifle ammo.
