Hey MPI,
I purchased my first 911 about three years ago. I ended up with a 1977 coupe.
100k on the clock that needed engine work.
Because it was numbers matching I rebuilt the 2.7, addressing all the problems with the mag case with the help of Ollies Machine shop, heads rebuilt etc etc.. They aren't cheap and I spent probably 6K and did the disassembly and reassembly myself. (licensed aircraft technician)
The mid years are great starting points. Try to find one that was dipped at the factory, mine has absolutely no rust.
As was mentioned all the engine issues should be sorted by now, if they haven't, build that into the price.
Be warned! You will get Porsche fever and I have found no cure yet, I think a 993 in the spring will cure me for a while.
Good luck, most of the fun is in the hunt!
