When Petty was racing they were much less of a spec class, there was a lot more flexibility in how drivers could build and set up their car. Today they are all basically the same thing, just change the stickers.

I'm not a NASCAR fan, but I think most of them are good dudes. A friend of mine was at the Wynn in Vegas where they were having some variety of driver's convention, he met and talked with a bunch of them. He said they were all very friendly and posed for photos with him. He talked with Clint Bowyer about his hometown of Emporia, KS, and Clint actually came over and struck up a conversation with him the next day.
