The storm drain would have to be sizable to say the least, even over a decade I cannot image such work - but possible.

I had that in the back of my mind, but a water main rupturing would make more sense to achieve the magnitude of hollowing out such a large area.

However all the mud would have to have a path down, way down.

That means a cave network or something below (underground stream?).

It's just not one thing, it's a rare combination of several things gone wrong.

A combination of man and nature colliding.

They are several miles from the Barren River, but right next to I-65, not sure if these are factors.
