It seems like most watch companies recommend maintenance intervals of about 5 years, but lots of folks go much longer. Three or four years seems pretty short. I would think that you could have cleaning/lubing done by a competent watch guy as long as nothing needed to be replaced.
If you have to wind the watch, then it's not an automatic. That would make it a manual. On the automatic watches that I've seen it's not actually even possible to wind them. Are you confusing automatic with mechanical?
There are quartz and mechanical movements. In Quartz there are automatic (citizen eco-drive) and standard battery driven. In mechanical there are manual (wind it manually) and automatic (wound by a weight on the back of the movement by you motion).
