For weekly driving, school runs and work we have a 2004 Ford Focus, 2ltr petrol, owned it for 6yrs and we have driven all over Europe in it on family holidays from where the beautiful, rich people live in Monaco to the darkest corners of rural Transylvania, Romania
We also have a 1994 Toyota 4 Runner 3ltr turbo diesel, great truck, gets me to where I want go no matter how bad the weather is, I'm sure it could take me overland to Vietnam or South Africa as easily as it takes me to the shops (one day I'm going to test that theory out), best all round practical car I have ever owned, this one I will keep forever
