I doubt the Russians will sit still until they achieve their goal, which is to be taken seriously, as they were at various times in the recent past. The loss of states during the breakup of the USSR is still smarting. The Russians want revenge. They have an incredible history and culture that they are extremely proud of, and rightfully so. Just as we adamantly wish (force) to expand our brand of democracy, the Russians wish to expand their vision.

Absolutely.
Take a look at the history and not just the last 100 years. Who on earth are we to think that after the USSR collapses out of the ruins a democratic society will grow? What is coming was in the works for many years.
This has the potential to make a huge mess in Europe, as what the balkan war almost ended up in the early 90's. As you might remember you as in the Americans had to stand up because the Europeans did not agree wit each other. (surprise...)
As an European I have been following the news pretty closely over the last 20 years. There are very large mistakes made that can not be turned around that easy. All worked reasonably ok up till the introductory of the Euro.
As much as the politicians try to sell their ideas and working hard to get their names in history books, their citizens don't support their idea's. The politicians try hard to build a united Europe that will be a world player. But it just not going to work. Why? Because deep down they all hate each other. History has proven this, and will be repeated. It's just a matter of time.
you might think what the heck this got to do with Russia. What I try to say is that ethnic background and a turbulent history is the major reason why this was bound to happen.
