I have long commute, but I ride the train, so I can sleep. It's too long of a commute many days. BUT near home, I have nearly everything I need. I sometimes have to drive a little ways to some stores be don't have out here. I'm not sure I could live in a place where everything of value during off hours was a long drive, which sounds like what you describe.
