Genetics of Mouse Behavior

Richard Palmiter uses genetic and viral transduction techniques to discern neural circuits that control mouse behavior. He is particularly interested in neural circuits that control appetite........................................

To understand why the mice starve after ablation of AgRP neurons, we assumed that loss of inhibitory signaling by these AgRP neurons resulted in hyperactivity of postsynaptic neurons elsewhere in the brain, which then promoted anorexia.
Looks like they already know how to make mice starve themselves to death.

And this...............

Photoactivation of CGRP neurons coincident with presentation of a novel food is sufficient to establish an aversion to eating that food.
Scary future, for the mice at least.
