1986 911 Valve adjustment help.

Hello folks, I am adjusting the valves on a 3.2 911, and although our host outlines clear step by step DIY points, my flywheel do not have a Z! marking and my distributor do not have the small slot to lighn up the rotor to.

The process I used was to rotate the engine until the rotor was pointing at #1 spark plug wire in the distributor, while watching a screwdriver placed in the #1 spark plug push out as the piston reach top of travel, carefully looking for a notch on the pulley that is coming up to the alignment mark on the fan housing lined those up.

Assuming that the engine was at TDC, i completed the sequence of adjusting the valves, rotating the engine 120 degrees for each set of adjustments. When the time came to adjust #5 intake and exhaust I rotated the engine as usual, but was not sure which of the two notches on the pulley to line up with, the starting point, or the notch very close to it. Meaning I would have to pass a notch in the sequence I had been following . I believe the book points to this notch as BTDC. Logic tells me to pass it and go to TDC, but this is my first on this and I ask advice.

Thanks for any help..
