I once tried some driving with the air filter open and just bungied down, I did love the sound. However the filter got dirty quickly and the seal along the edge was not so great after a while. This was on a CIS 911, not a Boxster just to clarify.
The snorkel removal only removes the outermost portion of the intake pipe that acts as a silencer. It in no way alters the filtration or other portions of the intake path. It is also 100% reversible. If you look at how convoluted and long the Boxster intake system is, I doubt it makes any performance difference.
