I started on a recurve, no sights, no rest, no release. Would shoot until the fletching cuts started dripping.
It made me a better archer when I started using the toys. It'll also teach you to shoot quickly. Still don't use a release. I'm a tab guy. I seem to need the string feel. Still got that first bow. I cut a older woman's yard, and when she went to pay me, I asked her if I could have the bow instead. After a few seconds of thought, she gave it to me.
