One possible answer might be the AFP or the Malaysian authorities were trying to crop-off someone unrelated in the first photo and didn’t want the size difference between the two photos upon release to the press, so, stupidly just used the second photo’s bottom half for fill-in. Still, it wasn’t accidental. A fair amount of ‘care’ was used in cropping the two photos together for a quick glance acceptance as a true image … except for that pesky white dividing line.
