Sell by, best if used by, etc... are not expiration dates. Sell by means just that, sell it by this date. They don't expect people to eat the food in their car in the parking lot. Best if used by is similar. It means that the food will taste best if eaten before that date. If it expires or must use by or something like that, then yeah, they may mean that the stuff
may be bad after that date. Even milk is not definitely bad after it's date. Smell is usually the best indicator, but it's not 100%.
Pickled food may be totally fine. It is pickled which is a way of preserving, but 10 years seems like a long time.
