Congrats on acquiring your 914
I second the idea of NOT changing your car untill you have had a chance to explore all that is now. IMHO (20 years of owning 914's), the best thing to do is to fix the rust, replace the fuel lines, and general maintenance on your teener.
Also, spend your $$ on going to school. (Gee, I sound like an old fart).
