Mr Anwar was sentenced to five years in jail in another long-running sodomy case only hours before Malaysia Airlines MH370 took off on its doomed flight to Beijing.
On Saturday his Keadilan (justice) party, one of three that make up the opposition, warned the government not to implicate the opposition in suggestions in some foreign media that Zaharie Ahmad Shah, the pilot, hijacked the aircraft because he was angry at Mr Anwar’s sentencing.
Mr Anwar was acquitted in 2012, for a second time, on charges that he sodomised a male aide, after a judge argued DNA evidence was unreliable. The government subsequently appealed. Three judges in a federal court granted the appeal, leading to Mr Anwar’s latest sentence.
