I think the old guy in the SUV wanted to force his way past by swerving into the left (oncoming) lane. He realized at the last moment that ("oh no!) this wasn't gonna work.
I see a lot of dumba$$ driving around here, so when I see a car that is dangerously close to pulling into my path, I usually slow down or brake. I assume that the guy doing that is dumb enough to pull out in front of me and I take it upon myself to avoid a wreck. I've saved myself many times this way.
