The check engine light basically began life as an emissions control system warning light, and in my cars I have never had the engine light come on for anything but an emissions control problem. Real problems that put you and your car in danger tend to come more directly and from other sources: low oil pressure, brake booster fault, etc. The newer the Porsche, the more likely it is to have a specific sensor and warning message for a real problem.

What code did you get? Probably someone here will know the likely causes for you based on the code, although I don't know how many Cayenne Diesel owners watch this forum. If it helps, my 2004 Cayenne Turbo sometimes gets a CEL in warm weather when opening the fuel cap and it will probably resume that behavior when the weather improves, until I find time to install the replacement air line that has been sitting on my shelf all winter. Yours could have a similar vacuum line issue.
