I've had both, have a '75 US Carrera [with 3.0] now, have had it for 8 years, had the 914 for 10+ years. Both fun cars for sure. Both are collectible and rare which can limit the mods you might want to make.
The stock 911T 2.0 in the 914 is not huge fun, but any 911 will bolt in, I built a 2.2E for mine. The shift pattern is odd, takes some getting used to but same as early 911 I think. Stock brakes suck. 914 probably more forgiving to drive hard and generally makes more sense layout-wise.
