Talked with the guy that did the work 10 years ago - says that since the only one side of the plug touched the steel, that it wouldn't have tripped the GFI. Said that GFI's trip (among other cases) when there's a short between the
both prongs. Don't know if that's true, but I have borrowed a GFI plug-in tester and will be checking it out this weekend - and replacing the receptacle!
