Pretty sure it is the mid-Atlantic ridge where it comes up on land in Iceland. I think it is saltwater. I saw a tv program where they dove in a place that looked just like that, but I can't remember if it was a freshwater lake that formed in the rift or if it was a part of it that connected to the ocean.
One side is the North American Plate, the other is the European Plate.
If you drive up to Willow Springs you cross from the Pacific Plate to the North American Plate. So that is the other end of the land mass on which Willow Springs sits.
