well. I'm a bodyman so my goto is usually a big hammer. but in this case a nice big screwdriver with a hard plastic handle works well. use the plastic end, not the pointy one.
FWIW once you've confirmed the problem I'd just replace the valve, not worth trying to see what's wrong, think you've fixed it, and having it stick again. very good way to start a fire.
I've got a bunch of spares and I'd be happy to send you some. you could pick them up at the mercantile/post office once you dig yourself out of the cabin and hook up the sled dogs.
