No that's not the main reason why. Those early clipless shoe were coming apart from the lifting where traditionally the straps were there to prevent that from happening. I had two pairs of shoe that did just that. Some track riders still do that for added power transfer.

Didn't notice the straps in those fotos prior. Explanation makes sense. My brother found a pair of NOS 80's Sidi shoes at a thrift store the other day. Too small for him, they fit me perfectly
Was debating on finding some platform pedals and straps for the Gitane .... but on 2nd thought, I'm spoiled with my SPDs
