Never heard any news report it but there was a theft called Jackpotting. Understand the banks kept it out of the news so nobody would get any ideas.

The theifts did the dial thing with your computer like in War Games. When an ATM answered they would find it's location. A bagman in a disguise would go to the ATM usually late at night. The bagman would signal when nobody was around. The hacker would dial up the ATM and send the dump code that made it spit out all it's cash. The bagman would grab the cash and go. They just had to make sure nobody was around and that the video camera couldn't identify them or their car and the phone they called from was not traceable. Most ATMs in the bank vestibules had around 250K when freshly loaded.

Heard about this at a hacker convention. They were surprised how little security was on an ATM. Haven't heard about this is a very long time. I assume the ATMs have been updated to NOT answer the phone. Also at that time hackers were making money by hacking banks, proving they were hacked by taking a very specific amount of money and returning it to the bank, then offering to fix their system for a fair market fee. The convention I attended had as many computer security people attending as actual hackers.
