It is a question of where to "look". Remember, passive acoustic ranges are measures in miles, even with very sophisticated sensors.
The search area has not been fully defined until, I hope, the last few days. Mowing the ocean with a sub is very ineffective.
The ships in the search are using towed array technologies, very effective, but just as limited in the passive role. The sensors are "listening"'. That is the key. Once they have an idea where the BB is, they can employ more active sensors.
