The vent tube is not there to drain acid. When a battery is charged and discharged, hydrogen and oxygen are created and vent from the battery. On a vehicle like a 911 where the battery is in an (A) an enclosed space and (B) connected to the interior, this is a dangerous situation.
The vent tube allows the gasses to be routed safely to the exterior of the vehicle. You won't see a vent tube type battery in the engine bay of a vehicle since it does not have this situation.
