i like having all four corners the same size tire too, for the reasons you state. i'm not arguing the wisdom or benefits of that. these cars don't need staggered tires, and having them all the same is really a no brainer.

all i was saying is that there will be sidewall flex with a rim designed for a smaller tire, and that it may or may not be desirable. snap-back can be a problem, especially in autocross. it costs you weight transfer efficiency, which costs time. understeer is worse, but the fastest autocross guys always have a car that they can toss with a minimum of secondary motion. on the track, a softer tire, which is what results from over-sizing, increases tire temps. that will shred tires and also cost time.

a commuter will benefit from a larger tire, even on a rim designed for a smaller one, due entirely to the increased bump absorbency.

it really depends on what is planned for the car.
