all i was saying is that there will be sidewall flex with a rim designed for a smaller tire, and that it may or may not be desirable. snap-back can be a problem, especially in autocross. it costs you weight transfer efficiency, which costs time. understeer is worse, but the fastest autocross guys always have a car that they can toss with a minimum of secondary motion. on the track, a softer tire, which is what results from over-sizing, increases tire temps. that will shred tires and also cost time.

a commuter will benefit from a larger tire, even on a rim designed for a smaller one, due entirely to the increased bump absorbency.

it really depends on what is planned for the car.
You and I are on the same page about rim & tire sizes, Remember, his car should have come with 7&8X16s, so 225s have been used by Porsche on 7X16s for years, my 88 Turbo "S" came with 7&9X16, with 225/50/16 & 245/45/16 tires, so Porsche also feels that a 7X16 rim is fine for 225/50/16s, as the used them on the rear of 911SCs & 911 Carreras and on the front of the 944 Turbo "S"s and 89 944 Turbos. Course I still suggest (if he is still running his stock wheels) that he get another pair of 8s so he can rotate them.

The Turbo "S" with 225s on the 7s

Same car but with the Club Sports from my 924S with 205s
