I have been to some small islands near there. It is actually a very beautiful place. The islands rise up out of the ocean dramatically, vertically, the bottom is probably much the same.
All ships are fallible to some degree. The ocean takes what it wants.
My guess, since it was undeniably off-course is that 1. the hull hit a rock,
2. made a huge gash,
3. water influx,
4.tilt-over,
5. sunk.
