I think you've got the right idea! I'm leaving mine uncoated so they're always looking nice, although they will require maintenance. If I get sick of it, I'll have the autobody teacher at my school clear them with something tested and proven. Also, I would think it's gonna take much longer than what you're expecting to sand. All of those little machined ridges have to be sanded down, and it takes time, especially the 1000 grit. You will definitely want to make sure they're polished to a mirror finish before you mask and prime, because it will be tough going back in there with a buffing wheel and not removing the fresh paint.
