Scientists were able to find an earth-like planet 500 light years away because they used technology specifically developed for that singular task, borne of many, many decades (centuries actually, if you go back to Galileo) of research and development focused on space research.
In this case, the technologies required are totally different. There is no relation whatsoever. No one has developed a precise, yet far reaching method to search our 2 to 3 mile deep (on average) oceans of water that surround our planet for what amounts to an insignificant speck relative to this gigantic world we live on. It is a daunting task, and one I do not see them EVER accomplishing.
