Trust me I'm not trying to wear you guys out concerning ASW (which the passive phase of the search for the ping from the 777 really was), but I did it for many years as part of my job flying SH-60's.

I am, frankly, looking into the Penguin Bombers...
Well I consider a great range to be over 1,000 miles and as the old system was able to triangulate the single bang from the Soviet K-129 when it sank and that was some 1,500 miles from Hawaii I guess the system does in fact work at long distances.

"The combination of location within the ocean and the sensitivity of arrays allowed the system to detect acoustic power of less than a watt at ranges of several hundred kilometres (The system is so sensitive that it can even detect the presence of Soviet/Russian Tu-95 Bear 4-engine bombers flying overhead"

This was from a system that was originally designed in the 1950's.

Whatever name you give it, SOSUS or any of the upgrades IUSS, SOFAR, ARTEMIS or whatever it is being called now the system seems to work.

If in the 1960's they could track a ship crossing the Atlantic ocean underwater "In 1961, SOSUS tracked the Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM) submarine USS George Washington (SSBN-598) from the US to the UK." This was with paper graph printouts. Imagine what they could do with the current processing power and abilities. They could be able to ID a ship by hull design and propeller. The computers could be able to ID known ships (build a data base of every ship sailing the ocean) and while tracking those ships eliminate their noise signal to allow them to ID and track any new noises/threats.

Not saying you didn't do your job to the best of your abilities, but maybe all the information is/was a few levels above your pay grade.

Dolphins with lasers on their heads would take care of the Penguin bombers.
