I love E39's and had a 2000 M5 and have had a 528 for over 10 years. All work has been DIY. The 6 cyl are rock solid. I have over 200k on the 528 and it shows no sign of going down. I only had the M5 for about 2 years, but didint have any problems. I think I got about 18 mpg in mixed driving, but got around 26 on the highway. I think on average, the 8 cyl engines have a few more problems than the 6's.
If your company is paying for gas or mileage I would go for the M.
