New PC standards for people with disabilities
Where I work, we have lots of mandatory training throughout the year. This is a new one that has to do with dealing with people with disabilities. I'm all for the idea, but some of the new PC surrounding it seems a bit silly.
Incorrect terms
Hearing impaired
the disabled, handicapped person
vision impaired
retarded, mentally handicapped
handicapped parking
normal, healthy
brain damaged
crippled
wheelchair bound
Correct terms
deaf or hard of hearing
person with a disability
person who is blind or has low vision
intellectual disability
accessible parking
person without a disability
person with a brain injury
person with a physical disability
person who uses a wheel chair
OK, a couple of those, I get. "Retarded", yeah, I understand that one, especially since it's become a term used mostly by kids in a derogatory manner.
Some just really seem silly and over the top. I don't want to offend people, and I try not to. At the same time if you're easily offended, I think you need to grow thicker skin. The world isn't fair, and at times can really suck, whether you're a person with a disability or a person without a disability.
