If you install a push fit plug...by all means freeze it first.
If it becomes a push fit with fingers or light push with tool...then you probably have the correct fit.
A little sealer would not be overkill.
And Walt...yes...a lathe is the answer....have had several over the years...makes a great addition to the shop...and being cheap like me...I make all sorts of things to save money or just move projects along without the need to wait for parts.
