I've had a few encounters with bears in the mountains over the years. Two were coming upon them at close range (like 1-0 - 15 ft.) when we both didn't realize the other was there. You'd think a bear could perceive an approaching person, but I guess they either don't always or wait thinking you will change course. They took off running in both instances. Once when hiking back from a lake in the Sierras, I heard a small noise and looked up in a tree to see two really cute cubs. As a reaction I stopped and looked thinking how cute they were. The next immediate thought was where the mother was. I just casually turned and continued on down the trail not looking back & never saw her.
